Borrowed Conversation

We only influenced each other totally. We only bruised each other even more so.

It was a lazy Saturday afternoon, we were stretched out on the couch, sprawled on opposite ends.

"You're in my blood like holy wine, you taste so bitter and so sweet," I recited, touching your feet delicately. You emitted a brief laugh, but your eyes flickered a different emotion at the undertones of the conversation. Layers upon layers. (I love you)

"I'm a high school lover, and you're my favorite flavor," you replied softly, dropping your eyes away from mine. (I don't)

I flinch, my hands move away from your feet. "I am thirty two flavors and then some," I say flatly, covering up my hurt.

"What I am to you you do not need. What I am to you is not what you mean to me," you tell me, though you reach across the couch to pull me to you. Pulling me away as you push.

"Why don't we break up, there's nothing left to say," I said, turning away harshly.

"What if the best was yet to come? And this was only the first part run." You are next to me, you stroke my hair gently.

"I could talk to you till I'm blue in the face. But we still would arrive at the very same place," I reply tiredly, unable to keep the tinge of cynicism out of my voice. "With you running around and me out of the race."

My exhaustion seems to absorb into you. You drop your hands from my face and admit, "There are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don't know how."
(Because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me)

I turned around to meet your gaze. "Just say that you love me. Fool me," I say.

"Go on and fool me."

~

You were silent. I had tears running down my face. You finally say, "do you realize, that you have the most beautiful face?"

That was the most you could offer.

I smiled, I gave in. I took it.

"Hey," you moved towards me, cupping my face in your hand, wiping the tears away, "why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?"

I laughed despite everything crumbling around us and embraced you tightly, burying my head into your shoulder, looking past you. I inhale the smell of you deeply, shakily, one last time.

"We never change do we? We never learn how to leave," I murmured.
