'It's easier to leave than to be left behind'
She assured her everything would be fine. She was sure they would see each other again. They were never the best of friends, the closest of friends. They were there for each other, that was all. It was a bond of convenience, a friendship that happened because they were there, at that place, at that time. It was not interest that held them together, it was something else. It was neccesity. So when they stood apart from each other at the airport, she smiled and she shrugged. Don't worry. We'll see each other soon.
And she looked around. Then she saw the people around here, and they were crying and they were sad. Because she was leaving, and it might be the last time they saw her. She felt a tug somewhere in her throat. No. That's silly. That's stupid. They weren't even best friends in the true sense of the words. No. No, she wouldn't. Then it was time. She looked everywhere again, except where she wanted to..at her shoes, around her, at the tear-streaked faces. But eventually, she turned to the friend, who looked hesitant, expectant.
She smiled, she stretched open her arms. They hugged. It was awkward, it was short. It was all they had left. Once it was over, she wished she had done it better. But all she did was say, I'll see you soon!, the words empty as they left her mouth. There was that tug again. She ignored it.
She watched the retreating figure as it went past the doors, as it went down the elevator. She watched her head disappear, painstakingly slow. Goodbye, I guess.
She went home and went up to her room. It was quiet and empty, even more so than usual. There was that tug again. She almost cried. Almost. She hated how they ruined midnights for her. She shut her eyes before they revealed anything else.
The next day, she thought she was better. She took a few steps and saw someone who reminded her of the friend. It tugged her heart, her eyes became wet. It was no use. She didn't want to admit it, but the person that left, had meant something. Had mattered.
-------------------------------------------------------------
They were her foundation.. they were her bones. They grounded her. They were so unabashedly safe that she never noticed they were there. Until they left. And she was now floating upwards towards an angry sky that didn't care for petty human hearts.
